Alabama Retirement

Alabama has weather similar to Florida's but without the tourist crowds, and it is not quite as prone to hurricanes.  It is a subtropical climate with mild winters and wonderful autumns (summers are hot and muggy) and appeals to northern seniors.  Golf, beach resorts and sport-fishing are popular year round.

Other attractions include civil rights movement landmarks, Civil War sites (the Confederacy's first capitol was in Montgomery, now the state capitol) and the Tuskegee Institute.  Alabama's economy is based on steel although agriculture and tourism are also important.  In 1819, Alabama became the 22nd state and in 1861 it joined the Confederacy.

Alabama has a fairly extensive network of  resources for seniors, beginning with the Alabama Department of Senior Services.  Here retirees can find information about emergency services, foster grandparent programs, senior housing options, various outreach programs, health screenings, employment services and more.

Alexander City

For retirees seeking a peaceful town with a below average cost-of-living, Alexander City, Alabama is definitely worth considering.  Lake Martin, the primary attraction in this area, is about 10 miles down the road and is a sparkling  blue body of water with 750 miles of shoreline.  The Lake offers first-class recreational opportunities in all kinds of water sports, including fishing, sailing and water skiing.  Increasing numbers of retirees are discovering this affordable retirement destinations, yet housing in Alexander City remains reasonably priced.  Lakefront homes average slightly above $200,000, but homes in town average $70,000.  Property taxes are less than in many other areas of the United States.

Fairhope

This charming town of about 10,000 year-round residents is located on the eastern shore of Alabama's Mobile Bay, about 25 miles from Mobile, and is one of several possible retirement destinations in the area.  Known as an arts colony, retirees will find excellent restaurants and art galleries, as well as upscale shops and boutiques.  Overall, the cost-of-living is less than the national average.  Neighborhoods boast large, single-family homes, many with porches and gardens.  There are several county-club style developments in the area, and there are beach condos for sale.   There is plenty to do here, as the Gulf Shores, a long narrow island with white sandy beaches, has resort amenities, hotels and restaurants.  Be prepared for hot summers and high humidity since this is a subtropical climate.
