Great Retirement Destinations for Climate

When retirees are looking for the best place to settle, they often cite climate as the top reason to choose one retirement destination over another.  Florida and Arizona continue to be top retirement spots because they are warm (and often hot) year-round.   There are other options!   We've also included cost-of-living estimates for each town below.

Chapel Hill, North Carolina

This college town is becoming more popular with retirees, partly because of its mild four-season climate.  Summers tend to be slightly hot (88 degrees), with 50% humidity, but there are no 0-degree days and only 83 days per year, on average, of 32 degree temperatures.   112 clear days a year, with 253 partly cloudy days.  Very slight wind, and about 43 inches of rain a year, spread evenly throughout the year.

Cost-of-Living:  Slightly above the national average.

Laguna Beach-Dana Point California

Laguna Beach-Dana Point boasts mild weather throughout the year.  Just 40 miles south of Los Angeles, the temperatures rarely dip below 32 degrees in the winter or rise above 90 degrees in the summer.   There are 150 sunny days a year.   Average annual precipitation is 12 inches.

Cost-of-Living:  Well above the national average

Las Cruces, New Mexico

Las Cruces is located 40 miles northwest of El Paso, Texas.   Summers are characterized by hot days and cool nights. 105 days with temperatures above 90 degrees each year.  The winters are very mild.  Sunny 195 days a year.   Average annual precipitation is10 inches, so there is not a lot of humidity.

Cost-of-Living:  Below the national average
