Myrtle Beach alone has more golf courses per square mile than any other city on
earth (according to the city's Chamber of Commerce). There are
several key retirement locations in the state, including gracious
Charleston, the Grand Strand along the coast and luxurious Hilton Head
Island. For retirees seeking outdoor recreation beside golf,
the Blue Ridge Mountains offer rafting, hiking, biking and many other
activities.
The English established a settlement in South Carolina
in 1670, and the state was eighth in joining the Union.

Hilton Head
This small island off the coast just north of the southern state line
was "discovered" by English captain William Hilton in
1663. Population growth here in recent years has been
explosive; there are now more than 20 golf courses, 150 restaurants, 300
or more shops and a dozen condominium complexes. A year-round
population of 30,000 swells to more than 150,000 in the summer, so if
you do not enjoy lots of people in a small space, this might not be the
place for you. Retirees here enjoy the beach and having plenty of
things to do, including boating, shrimping, tennis, fishing, hiking and
more. There is also a museum, theater, jazz ensembles, art
galleries, an arts center and plenty of opportunities for
volunteerism. For anything not found on the island,
Charleston and Savannah, Georgia are not far away. The
climate is mild (winter temperatures rarely drop below 35 degrees) with
four seasons. Health care is good, particularly now that more
seniors are retiring here. The cost of living is slightly higher
than the national average, and real estate is fairly
expensive.
